The general issue of public funding isn't the only reason to be skeptical. How do you keep money like this from going to the hedge fund chains, etc., or the CNHIs and Cherry Roads, even, that are just craptacular for other reasons?
It's an issue with federal legislation proposals,too.
I wrote about this in detail just about exactly a year ago with "Community News and Small Business Support Act" thoughts, noting that that bill was better than the Local Journalism Sustainability Act (my thoughts on it linked on the main link), but that that was a low bar. https://beloblogging.blogspot.com/2023/08/community-news-and-small-business.html
And, none of these bills mention the idea of trying to get Ad Council money to local newspapers, ie: "This is your brain on the lack of a local newspaper."
